How to get into the Roguelike Genre

Roguelike Genre

Have you ever wondered if you can ever be as fast as the flash or shoot a million bullets per second, well if I have the type of game genre for you. When it comes to gaming every game has its own type of genre to it. The genres could range to Fps (First person shooter) or to mmorpg (Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game). When it comes to the genre that we are talking about today this genre has its own special qualities to it. The Roguelike genre has its own special qualities is because it can be a different game every time you start it up. The genre is based on collecting loot and going through the game with different areas and loot every time meaning that the same thing never happens when you play. This type of genre unlocks millions of different paths you can take as a player and show you a good time if you get the lucky run. This type of genre can also lock you in for hours of excitement wanting you to press play again after every death or new game.

Why play a Roguelike Genre Game

The reason why I got into the roguelike genre games were the amount of power you can possess in a character. A simple rundown of a roguelike game would be to become a God and able to kill anything in site. The only downside I ever see to why roguelike games are bad is that once you die you have to restart the process over again and you wont get the same items as the last run. To me I feel like that's the best part of the game to which its not the destination its the journey when playing roguelike games. If you ever wanted to play a game that is about the journey and wanting to keep going on that journey forever you can with roguelike games to where they have implemented ways to break the games main objective and restarting from scratch with the items you already have. Then the bigger reason to why I enjoy roguelike games is the fact that you are able to go above and beyond by going super speed, being a massive tank, or killing enemy's in one blow or doing all of those in one. If you want to go above the normal roguelike games are the way to go.

Types of Roguelike Games that a new player should play.

The Binding of Isaac

Backstory of the Game

This game is about how Isaac's mother hears the words from God demanding for Isaacs life to prove her faith to him. She then agrees to give her sons life away to which Isaac finds out and then proceeds to hide in his basement running away from his mother to where he is put into a predicament to where he has to fight his way through monsters in his basement while running away from his mother collecting items and fighting his fears which are bosses to the point where he himself has to end his mothers life.

Gameplay

You start off as Isaac and you have to use arrow keys to shoot tears and they will go in that direction. You also have a bomb which is used when the player presses q and when you have an active item you would press e to use it. When the game starts there will always be a tutorial on controls then once you go to the next area you will fight against monster's to which you will use your tears to kill them and rinse and repeat. The process changes when you gain items to make your character stronger to which you will have a harder time or easier time getting through the game. If you think you are up to the task start with The Binding of Isaac and find out what happens when you play.

Risk of Rain 2

Backstory

The backstory to this game is quite simple as you are playing a survivor from a crash landed cargo spaceship and you are stuck on a planet where everything is trying to kill you.

Gameplay

Risk of rain is a 3rd person shooter where you as the player have a roster of 10 characters to choose from all with different playstyle from each other. The player has to kill monsters and gain gold from them to open chest with that gold and gain items to help your character out. You will then find a teleporter structure on the map with ashy particles near it and summon a boss to go on the next level. This process repeats over and over again until you get to a special part and with the 75+ items in the game you will have something at the end to where you either break the game or have to do it all over again.

Hard Roguelikes I played

These roguelikes I have played but always seemed to struggle with so I dont have that much information to provide but if you would like to try them out feel free to.

Enter the Gungeon

Enter the Gungeon is a bullethell roguelike game which means that you will have to keep killing while dodging a bunch of enemy bullets. I have gotten quite far in this game once but that was with one week and each day being an hour of gaming maybe if you keep playing this game it looks quite fun to play.

BPM: Bullets Per Minute

Bullets per minute is another bullethell game where you are playing in a rhythm action first person shooter roguelike. This game requires the player to shoot on the beat to the rock soundtrack that is in the game which is the main aspect of the game. This game I have played about two days worth which was probably the most frustrating but very much worth game to play. With playing those two days It has been intriguing as you will figure out the beat maybe after 5 runs of the game and start to enjoy it but I have yet to break the game in this, worth to try out if you are into fps games.
